Hidden in a forest of rare red stringybark trees, winds a narrow roadway up to a secluded hilltop retreat: Trestrail Cottage. This is the place to create special memories. Lovingly handbuilt and tastefully decorated by its owners, Sue and Vivian Ziersch, Trestrail Cottage is perfectly suited for the couple seeking ambience with a rustic touch, serenity and, a whole world of privacy.
In 1985, Vivian Ziersch began clearing a space on the land his family had owned for years, to build a comfortable cottage ideally suited for short breaks, not knowing where it would all lead … as each hand-hewn stone formed the sturdy walls, Vivian hoped the cottage would rouse in guests the outstanding Aussie images we love so well; rain on the roof, the kookaburra’s ‘no-worries’ laugh, kangaroos sprawled under the shade of gums, and the scent of eucalypt. What the Zierschs succeeded in building is a well-appointed, self-contained cottage – and so in 1992, Sue and Vivian opened the doors of Trestrail Cottage, so named for the first land-title owner, a Cornish miner named John Trestrail.
Situated only a few kilometres from Clare, Trestrail Cottage offers heritage, secluded accommodation with all the modern comforts, perfectly blended with the charm of many lovely items from the pioneering past. Many of these décor items are themed from the original meaning of Trestrail – “the house of the mat maker and weaver”.In addition to the pleasing décor, there are many fine comforts to be found, including the option of gourmet provisions supplied. Trestrail oozes a sense of homecoming, a slower pace and a ‘tingle’ of well being. Here you can enjoy hands-on history, breathtaking views, unique native flora, fauna, and acres of bushland, vineyards and all the delights of the Clare wine region. Within only a few minutes walk, drive or cycle, there are a variety of outings to enjoy, such as cellar-door wine tastings, quality wineries and restaurants, walking and cycling the popular Riesling Trail, as well as access to the heritage towns, Auburn, Burra and Mintaro.
